Through this study, we are gathering information about the needs of men and women caring for siblings with intellectual or developmental disabilities, particularly those needs that are essential at the time when decisions about assuming (or expanding) the caregiving role are being made. Anyone who is a brother or sister (age 22 or older) of an adult, also age 22 or older, with an intellectual or developmental disability that was diagnosed prior to age 22 and provides care, emotional support, concrete support, oversight, or companionship for a sibling with a developmental disability and/or for the primary caregiver of the brother or sister with the disability (e.g. parent, other sibling or family member, or paid caregiver) for an average of 16 hours per month and resides in the United States is eligible to be part of this study. Ultimately, a resource guide will be created to help siblings who are in the process of making decisions around care for a brother or sister with a disability and also to inform service providers of meaningful ways to include siblings in care planning at an earlier stage.
